The Positioning Audit: Why Your Strategy Isn't Working (And What to Fix)

I have to admit it - I’m a girl with a slight obsession with coffee. I’ve tried to quit so many times, but the addiction is real. And tbh, I’m not mad about it. I love coffee. The way it smells. The way it tastes. The energy it gives me in the morning. The afternoon fuel to get me through the rest of my day. Why would I try and quit such a little slice of heaven on earth?

So when this cute little cafe opened up across the street from my house, I had to check it out.

why your positioning strategy isn't working

This little modern spot was understated, small, and very refined. They only have 4 little tables and a couple of beautiful leather club chairs that look like something plucked right out of the latest RH catalog, with sleek charging stations all over the place. Their “coffee connoisseurs” are all refined, wearing all black pants and black collared shirts, hair pulled back, very sophisticated. They greet you with a warm, but sophisticated, “Welcome to Java” when you walk in the door.

And their menu, well, it’s something out of GQ. A black chalkboard wall with a simple sans serif font that clearly communicates each menu item. Every item is poised, clearly communicated, and power packed. They serve coffee, a refined collection of teas, wraps, salads, and power bowls, each one packed with nutrients to fuel your body & brain. Bags of coffee displayed in simple natural paper bags with sleek black labels.

Below the menu are baskets hung on a black iron pipes with various vegetables, herbs, and other ingredients to go inside their recipes.

There were a few other people inside enjoying their little space, smiling to the tune of whatever they were listening to on their earbuds, typing away on their laptops, just like me.

So I asked the girl behind the counter how a brand-new spot attracted such a specific crowd. She told me they'd had another location, but rent increased while their income decreased. So they made a choice: they moved locations to a different part of the city where more of their "client base" was living. And in less than a month of being open, they'd already done more in sales than they had done in 3 months at the previous location.

That my friends, is positioning. And it changes everything.

Here's what I see over and over with so many talented women I work with:

Their brand strategy isn't broken. Their lack of a positioning strategy is.

Most experts define their ideal audience by demographics: age, location, income, job title. And then they wonder why their messaging still doesn't land. Why people still don't see them as the obvious choice. Why they're competing on price instead of positioning.

That's because demographics aren't positioning.

They're a starting point.

And you've been treating them like the destination.

Here are the three biggest problems I see with most "positioning strategies" today...

Problem 1: You're not clear on the specific problem you solve.

Not the broad category, but the exact wound your ideal client is experiencing. And I'm not talking about the surface level problem their struggling with, I'm talking deep-rooted, intrinsic thoughts they have about themselves or their problems, and what they think it means about who they are.

For instance, let's look at a woman who wants to lose weight. A number on the scale isn't the issue. She is actually struggling with deeper-seeded thoughts about herself and her life in her current situation. She may struggle with a perceived inability to meet her goals, self-blame or guilt for where she's at physically, a feeling of loss or grief regarding her past physical capabilities, and how her body has changed. She could feel shame or have low self-esteem because of her perceived negative feelings of inadequacy or self-worth.

But if you're a fitness coach or nutritionist, just trying to sell her a weight loss package, she'll never be motivated or inspired to join, because her deep-rooted fears are actually keeping her stuck.

Problem 2: You're not speaking her language.

You're using your professional language instead of the language she uses when she's in pain, when she's desperate, when she finally admits she needs help.

Again, let's look at the same fitness coach & client scenario. If you jump on a call with her to talk about how you can help her and start talking about macro counting, intermittent fasting and carb cycling, she's going to be overwhelmed. I promise.

What she needs to hear is how you provide her simple meal plans that support her weight loss goals. How you'll show her how to optimize her nutrition for energy and fat loss, without restrictions.

Problem 3: You're not communicating why she should choose YOU.

Not why you're good, but why you're the only logical choice for her specific situation, at her specific inflection point.

Can I be honest with you? No matter what market or industry you're in, it's likely flooded with people just like you selling the same product, service or offering. So rather than feeling overwhelmed by it, giving up entirely, or selling the EXACT same thing, you need to personalize it. What makes YOU special? What makes your method, your offer, your service, your product different than the next persons offer?

When all three of those are missing, you become invisible. Not because your work isn't good. Because your positioning doesn't make her feel seen.

Here's how to know if & why your positioning strategy isn't working (+ how to fix it!)

Sign #1: You sound like everyone else in your industry

If someone removed your name from your website, would it still sound like you? Or could it be any other expert doing what you do?

If it's the latter, your positioning isn't differentiated. It's generic. And generic doesn't convert.

Sign #2: You're attracting the wrong people (or no one)

You're getting price-shoppers, skeptics, wrong-fit inquiries. People who are "interested but not ready."

People who ghost. When your positioning is clear, the RIGHT people raise their hands. The wrong people self-select out.

Sign #3: You feel embarrassed sending people to your website

This is the one nobody says out loud, but it's the most honest. If you feel that tiny cringe when you send someone to look at your brand, your positioning isn't aligned with who you've become. There's a gap

between your internal sense of your value and what your brand communicates.

Positioning isn't about your logo. It's not about your color palette. It's not even about your website.

Positioning is about answering three questions so specifically that when your ideal client encounters your brand, she immediately thinks: "This is for me. She gets it. She's the one."

Pause, and pull out a notebook. Answer these 3 questions:

Question 1: Who specifically do you serve?

Not "entrepreneurs" or "small business owners." Specifically. What does she look like at this moment in her journey? What's her inflection point?

For example, not "coaches" but "coaches who are stuck at 6-figures and ready to scale." Not "photographers" but "photographers launching their own business for the first time who are terrified of looking like a beginner."

Question 2: What's the specific problem you solve?

Again, not broad. Specific. Not "business growth" but "the clarity gap between who you've become as an expert and how the market currently perceives you."

Question 3: Why are you the logical choice for that specific person with that specific problem?

This isn't about being better. It's about being different in the way that matters to her. It's about the unique combination of your experience, your framework, your way of seeing, that makes you the only person who could deliver what she needs.

When you can answer those three questions in a way that feels true, your positioning is clear. And when your positioning is clear, everything else becomes easier.

Your messaging becomes obvious. Your website sells itself. The right people find you.

Let me show you what this looks like in real life.

why your positioning strategy isn't working

Heather came to me as a business coach. On paper, she had everything: real clients, solid results, years of experience. But she felt invisible. She was one of a hundred coaches promising "6-to-7-figure growth," using the same language, the same frameworks, competing on price instead of positioning.

When we diagnosed her positioning, here's what we found:

  • She was trying to serve every type of business owner

  • Her messaging focused on what she offered (coaching, frameworks, accountability) instead of what her ideal clients needed (clarity about what makes them different in a crowded market)

  • Her website told people what to expect, not why they should choose her

So we repositioned.

We got specific: She doesn't serve "all small business owners." She serves product-based founders who are ready to scale from 6-figures to 7-figures but feel stuck positioning themselves at a premium level.

We rewrote her messaging to speak directly to that person's exact experience: the gap between her expertise and how the market perceives her. The frustration of watching less experienced competitors grow faster. The desire to scale without losing who she is.

And we redesigned her website to show her work: real transformations, specific results, the exact process she uses to move someone from stuck to clear.

Within weeks of launch, everything shifted. She stopped hearing from price-shoppers and tire-kickers. She only started hearing from the exact people she was built to serve—ready to invest, ready to scale, ready to own their positioning.

Within 6 months, she was booked out for 6 months.

The difference? Clear positioning. The right message to the right person at the right moment.

I'm sure you still have a few questions. Let's talk through them.

"But won't a specific positioning limit my audience?"

No. It expands it. Here's why: When you try to serve everyone, you convert no one. When you're specific about who you serve, you become the obvious choice for that person—and she refers you to others like her. You grow faster, not slower.

"What if I want to eventually serve more people?"

You can. But you have to position clearly first. Master one audience. Own your lane. Then you can expand. But trying to expand before you're positioned is how experts become invisible.

"How do I know if my positioning is actually clear?"

Simple: Ask five people in your ideal audience if your brand immediately tells them whether it's for them. If they say yes without you explaining—you're positioned. If they say "I think so?" or "maybe?"—you're not clear yet.

You don't become the obvious choice by being better than everyone else.

You become the obvious choice by being crystal clear about who you serve, what makes you different for them, and why they should trust you.

That clarity isn't something you figure out alone. It's something you diagnose with someone who's seen this pattern a hundred times. Someone who can look at your business from the outside and name what's actually broken.

That's what the Brand Breakthrough Intensive is for.

The Brand Breakthrough Intensive™ is a strategic half-day session where we diagnose exactly why people aren't choosing you, where your positioning breaks down, and what needs to change.
